In my opinion, and I admit, I am biased, there is no more important piece to the “puzzle of success” for an athlete, than the “mental and emotional” piece.  KC Compton, a competitive cyclist and writer, states: “The key to becoming the athlete of your dreams is to get your mind and body on the ‘same page’.”  An athlete can have a strong, toned and fit body, incredible talent, great team-mates, the fastest times, a beautiful costume, or in general “have it all”.  However, if that athlete doesn’t believe in him or herself, won’t take constructive criticism, is afraid to "stand out", isn’t a team player, has less-than-desirable practice habits, or just plain "chokes" when they want to do their best, then none of the above matters.  Everyone involved is left frustrated, especially the athlete.  These issues can arise no matter what the age of the athlete, and can affect everyone from beginners to the highest level of elite or professional athlete.

Some of the key issues that we address with athletes both individually and in group formats are:

1.              The ability to recognize any “old” and/or “unhelpful” habits and ideas about individuals and their participation in sports.

2.              The ability to learn to let go of unwanted thoughts and labels, formulate new ideas for themselves as athletes and competitors, and re-evaluate them as they progress into the season and/or their careers.

3.              How to set ambitious but attainable short-term and long-term goals and how to recognize and remove “blocks” that prevent athletes from reaching those goals.

4.              An understanding of the benefits and techniques of Relaxation and Visualization.

5.              Additional ways to deal with the stress of practice and competition and how to keep the “enjoyment” in their sport even when the pressure is intense.

6.              Working effectively with coaching staff.

7.              An understanding of the connection between the Good Sportsmanship and Performance.

8.              Supportive and appropriate parental involvement.

9.              How to cope and recover in a positive constructive way when injured.

Of course, this is only a partial list and will depend on the individuals or groups interests and needs, as well as what challenges they are experiencing, and will evolve over time.  The “work” is done through interactive techniques that are thought provoking, and allow athletes to come to realizations gently in a” light-hearted” atmosphere that still “gets the job done”.
